Explaining Alzheimer’s disease to children isn’t easy, but storytelling can help” – the final lines of this film, and the exact approach we brought to the project.
We worked with colleagues and friends at Continuous and The Considered to bring this to life using papercraft textures, welcoming bright colours and charming character design, the entire piece was made to feel like a classic children’s book. Telling the story from Josh’s perspective, difficult truths of Alzheimer’s disease were given a child-like innocence through kindred “sea creatures”, and became real in scenes with his projected imagination.
These made the topics easier to understand, and easier to talk about for families. Taking this project from animatic to delivery, we developed characters, scenes and sounds. It was important that any audience member could place themselves in the story, as its a topic which affects so many.
Helping achieve this we lip-synced parts of the script to each character, letting every kind of person have a key role to play. Finessed with beautiful animation and bespoke audio, the project was a fantastic collaboration with purpose, and has been warmly received by the public and was even featured by The Huffington Post.
